Our Approach

Capital recognises local communities as essential partners in sustaining operations, contributing both a skilled workforce and our social licence to operate.

We work to create socio‑economic value through local employment, training, procurement and community investment, while assessing and managing potential impacts before commencing new activities.

As community relationships are usually led by our clients, we align with their engagement teams, management plans and grievance processes, collaborating closely to address issues and support agreed development priorities.

Where we operate outside client sites, we directly engage communities and deliver targeted initiatives that reflect local needs and our commitment to responsible, sustainable operations.

Local Community Investment

Our community investment approach incorporates a commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) where we can make meaningful contributions:

Raising Training Standards in Africa

In 2021, we invested in the International Apprenticeship and Competency Academy (IACA), in Tanzania.

IACA is a technical training organisation that delivers standardised UK accredited training, including apprenticeship programmes, skills validation, technical tests and HSE training.

  • IACA is the only Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) accredited agency in Tanzania
  • Trainees receive an internationally recognised accreditation, supporting greater employment opportunities
  • Programs are available to multiple industry sectors across Africa, supporting not just our own team, but development of skills and opportunity for many Africans
  • IACA is developing technical training centres across Tanzania to improve access to apprenticeship and training programmes and skills assessments
  • IACA works closely with the Tanzania Technical Training Regulator (NACTVET) and National Vocational Training Provider (VETA) to raise standards
  • IACA recently supplied welding training simulators and is working towards bringing International Certification for welder trainees

Providing Essential Maternal Healthcare

The Kamanga Health Centre, in the Mwanza Region of Tanzania is the only local facility providing quality health care for the community of 35,000 residents.

Our donation of USD~$120,000 to Australia for Cedar Tanzania will support the construction phase of a new maternity ward to provide delivery, pre-and-post-natal, post-caesarean and premature care for the region’s ~50 births per month. Additionally, it will provide specialist facilities for high-risk and complicated births and will help improve outcomes and minimise risks for pregnant women.

Local Procurement

Supporting local businesses is an important way for us to positively contribute to our communities – thereby sustaining economic development and enabling us to build strong ties with people around our operations.

While many goods and services required for our drilling, mining and laboratory activity are highly technical and can only be sourced from a few specialised companies wherever possible we look to source locally from the countries and communities in which we operate, including certified local equipment manufacturer agents or distributors.
