Bridging Academia & Industry: Hosting Dodoma Students at Geita Gold Mine
Over 2 months in July and August, our Geita operations had the privilege of welcoming a talented group of mining engineering students from the University of Dodoma’s College of Earth Sciences and Engineering (CoESE) as part of our long-standing partnership with the institution.
Over 2 months in July and August, our Geita operations had the privilege of welcoming a talented group of mining engineering students from the University of Dodoma’s College of Earth Sciences and Engineering (CoESE) as part of our long-standing partnership with the institution.
Hands-On Learning in Real Mining Environments
The collaboration aims to strengthen the bridge between academic learning and practical industry experience, ensuring the next generation of mining professionals is equipped with both technical expertise and on-site insight.
Over the course of their stay,12 students were fully immersed in the day-to-day operations of our site, gaining invaluable hands-on experience across drilling, blasting, and mining processes. From spending time at the drill rig site to witnessing our remote-controlled blast hole rigs in action, students saw firsthand how innovation and safety drive operational excellence at Geita.
Feedback from participants underscored the impact of the experience. Students expressed how their time on-site deepened their understanding of mining processes and inspired them to pursue careers in the field with renewed purpose and confidence.
Expanding Exposure Through Field Visits
To complement the extended placement, we also hosted the annual two-day field visit for 60 additional students and 7 staff members from the University of Dodoma. The visit offered an overview of our end-to-end mining operations and provided exposure to our health, safety, and environmental management practices.
A key highlight was the demonstration of our D65 blast hole drill rig simulator—the first of its kind in Africa, which enables operators to refine their skills in a safe, controlled, and technology-driven environment before stepping onto the field.
Investing in Tanzania’s Future Mining Leaders
We extend our sincere appreciation to our Geita team for their exceptional effort in mentoring and supporting the students throughout the program, sharing not only their technical knowledge but also their personal experiences and career journeys.
By fostering these connections between academia and industry, we remain committed to nurturing local talent and contributing to the development of Tanzania’s mining sector, ensuring that students graduate not just with qualifications, but with the skills and confidence to thrive in the real world.
